CONSORTIUM FOR PARENTAL ALIENATION RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY

What is parental alienation?

The set of symptoms that result from the process by which a parent, through different tactics or strategies, attempts to transform the consciousness of their children in order to prevent, hinder or destroy their ties with the other parent.

MISSION STATEMENT

To end the specific form of abuse and domestic violence whose purpose is to significantly interfere with or destroy the relationship of child and parent, known as parental alienation.

OBJECTIVES

ACTION PRINCIPLES

Above all, promote the child and adolescent’s subjective, long-term best interests.

This involves recognizing the individual, emotional and psychological needs of each child and adolescent affected by this phenomenon, as well as guaranteeing their well-being over time. To achieve this, it is crucial to establish safe and caring environments where minors can express their feelings and needs without fear of retaliation or manipulation.

Promote a reduction of violence, abuse, parental alienation, and its derivatives.

This involves implementing preventive and intervention measures that address the underlying causes of these destructive behaviors and promote family relationships based on respect, open communication and mutual support. It is crucial to provide education and awareness about these issues, as well as offer resources and support to victims so they can seek help and break the cycle of violence and alienation.

Promote parental cooperation

It is crucial that parents work together to make decisions in the best interest of the child, avoiding unnecessary conflict and adopting a collaborative approach in the upbringing and education of their children. Promoting cooperation between parents not only strengthens the family bond, but also provides emotional stability and security to the child, allowing them to develop in an emotional and harmonious environment.

Promote equal shared parenting.

This involves promoting a parenting model in which both parents actively participate in their children’s lives, sharing responsibilities and making collaborative decisions. By promoting equal co-parenting, we recognize the child’s right to maintain meaningful relationships with both parents, as well as to receive equal love, care and support.

Promote alternatives to judicial resolution mechanisms.

This involves encouraging the use of more collaborative conflict resolution methods focused on the best interests of the child, such as family mediation or family therapy. These alternatives offer a safe, neutral space where parents can address their differences, work toward mutually beneficial solutions, and maintain focus on their children’s emotional and psychological well-being.

Promote evidence-based research, scientific integrity, psychoeducation and prevention of all forms of child abuse

This involves supporting and funding rigorous research that sheds light on the underlying factors, long-term effects, and best intervention practices in cases of parental alienation. Furthermore, the dissemination of accurate and up-to-date information on this topic should be promoted, both for professionals and the general public, with the aim of increasing awareness and understanding of the risks and consequences of parental alienation.

Promote re-engagement programs.

These programs provide a safe, structured space where broken family ties can be rebuilt, providing emotional support, guidance and resources to all parties involved. Through specialized therapies, mediation sessions and relationship strengthening activities, we seek to reestablish trust and communication between the child and the alienated parent, allowing them to rebuild a healthy and meaningful relationship.

All activities and perspectives will acknowledge gender equality

It must be recognized that both fathers and mothers have the same right and ability to play a meaningful role in the lives of their children, regardless of their gender. Additionally, it is crucial to address entrenched gender norms that may contribute to parental alienation and work toward building family relationships based on mutual respect, collaboration, and equality.

Promote the rule of law.

It is essential to effectively address the issue of parental alienation and ensure the protection of the rights of all involved. This involves ensuring that laws and regulations related to family and parenting are applied fairly and equitably, without discrimination or bias. Furthermore, it is essential to promote transparency and accountability in the judicial system, ensuring that legal processes related to parental alienation are carried out in a fair, impartial and evidence-based manner.

Promote inclusivity and diversity to achieve the above.

To achieve the previously mentioned objectives in addressing parental alienation, it is essential to promote inclusion and diversity in all related initiatives. This involves recognizing and valuing the diverse experiences, identities and realities of families affected by parental alienation, as well as ensuring that the rights of all people involved are respected and protected, regardless of their ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion or any other characteristics
